The animation part itself is very important too, I agree. The key to realistic animation is, funny enough, exaggeration. Disney did extensive research on the topic and a good starting point would be this article: https://medium.com/@chow0531/12-principles-of-animation-80e245db4746 I think it applies to any kind of animation, character animation included. And I know a lot of animators record themselves as a reference, so that might help too.
